JOE NEWTON is 77-years-old, and in his 50th year of coaching at York High School He leads his team to their 25th state title in 2005. He is a master motivator, and is often called upon by Fortune 500 corporations to motivate leaders in business with his surefire wit, energy, and charisma.
THE DETTMAN TWINS – Seniors Matt and Eric Dettman have been running on the York varsity cross-country team since they were freshmen. 2005 is their chance to win their fourth consecutive state title. Matt and Eric are the captains of the team and lead by example, proving that hard work and discipline are the linchpins of being a champion.
JOHN FISHER is a senior. Coach Newton calls John “the greatest overachiever” that he has even known. Following in his brother’s footsteps, John took the Newton message to heart and trained until he became the #10-ranked runner on the 2005 team. He truly believes that “Cross-country is like LIFE.”
CHARLIE KERN is the assistant coach. Charlie is a father of three and met his wife, Lynn, while running at the University of Kentucky. Lynn grew up on the same street in Elmhurst as Joe Newton. Fate brought Charlie to Newton in 1991—he arrived at a practice and offered his services as a student teacher. Newton then stood up and proclaimed, “This man has been brought to me from GOD!”
Connor was born with Cerebral Palsy. He walked in braces up until he joined the York Cross Country team. His teammates welcomed him with open arms and made him feel like he was a part of the team. He is no longer walking in his braces and his self esteem has blossomed.
JOE KIOLBASA is the quintessential freshman. He is bright-eyed and nervous on the first day of school, seeking his identity among the 100s of other young men. He is instantly recruited onto the cross-country team. He wants “ my name to be known for something, like running or playing the saxophone.”
MATTHEW SHEPLEY is a senior, and the captain of GROUP SIX – the fun-loving bottom-ranking half of the York cross-country team. Shepley is a strong leader. He is a former football player who makes it his mission to share the gospel of Newton with the rest of the team.
